The Correctional Officer Technical Certificate offers students a competitive edge when seeking employment for entry-level positions in the corrections field. This certificate may also benefit those who are already employed but need a credential to advance.

Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion, the graduate will have developed the skills, knowledge, and abilities to accomplish the following:

Discuss the history of corrections, special populations in corrections, gangs, and PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act).
Identify issues concerning mental illness, suicide prevention, officer wellness, and sexual harassment in corrections.
Demonstrate effective communication, and problem-solving skills necessary for an entry level position in corrections.
Identify and cite laws concerning use of force, duty to intervene, and constitutional and civil rights laws for corrections populations.

Professional Certification - The Tennessee Correctional Institute (TCI), under the authority of TCA 41-4-140, establishes minimum standards for adult local jails, lockups, workhouses and detention facilities in the state. TCI is responsible for educating local correctional staff while providing and monitoring basic certification and annual in-service training for personnel within local adult correctional detention facilities.
Students having earned the Tennessee Corrections Institute (TCI) Certification are eligible to receive one credit hour at VSCC for CRMJ 2191 .
